Writer, Artist, Producer and Freelance Arts Marketing & PR
Welcome. I hope you enjoy having a look around. Please contact me if there is something you would like to talk about, a piece of work I could do for you or in collaboration with you. It might be a commission or a project, it could be small or something wild, sprawling and wonderful. I love pushing myself in new directions, working in collaboration and in particular exploring what role the written word can and is having in contemporary performance and visual arts practices.
Artist Statement: Joanna Jowett is a writer, artist and producer based in Leeds and is also co-director of COPY, an artist’s publishing platform. With a background in Performing Arts, her practice expands across art writing, photography, poetry, printing and performance and often deals with themes of motherhood, grief, identity, mental health, nature and the environment.
“Joanna delivered a book binding workshop for our Leeds 2023 project about publishing (23PRESS). The session was perfectly paced and huge fun – participants loved the process and the books they created. Joanna is a skilled workshop facilitator, highly organised, friendly and well-resourced. She brought creative energy and ideas to the session and everyone left feeling inspired to use their new skill!“ Pamela Crowe, Lead Artist, 23PRESS
“I worked with Joanna for just under two years, she was instrumental in establishing Leeds College of Art’s alumni association. Joanna has great people skills and experience across a number of fields, she is also enthusiastic and reliable. I’d thoroughly recommend her for freelance project work and look forward to working with her again” Andrew Craske, Head of Marketing & Communications, Leeds Arts University
“Joanna’s expertise and drive were invaluable to Migration Matters Festival 2018, helping to expand our reach to new audiences, as well as making important links with reputable media & press outlets. She boosted our online & social media presence and could recognise exactly how to engage people across those platforms. It is however, her commitment not only to the job but to the values and vision of the project that enabled the project to succeed beyond what we thought was possible. She is an asset to any project or organisation.” Sam Holland, Festival Director, Migration Matters Festival (Associate Producer Role 2018)
I am an artist, writer and producer, working across the fields of performance, theatre and visual art. I produce events and publications as co-director of COPY, an artists publishing platform delivering writing and publishing projects. I write poetry, reviews and creative texts and prose. My writing and my artwork often overlap.
I also work in a freelance capacity as an arts marketing and communications manager and consultant. Offering services including project and event management, press, marketing and communications, copy writing and editing, as well as audience development and engagement work. I work with organisations on planning, delivery and evaluation and have a creative approach, using a mixture of on and off-line activities to reach new and existing audiences. With over 10 years experience in writing plans and strategy for arts organisations and educational institutes, I am able to offer bespoke marketing, press and social media campaign plans for both small and large budgets, long and short term time frames. Clients I have worked with previously include Freedom Studios, Two Tonne Theatre, Mafwa Theatre, Third Angel, Red Ladder Theatre Company, Unlimited Theatre and Yorkshire Dance.
My work often involves producing and managing events. I am the Producer of Leeds based theatre company Speak Woman Speak. I have produced everything from panel discussions, networking events, live performances, festivals and multi-disciplinary events in a range of settings.
I am available to deliver talks and workshops on independent publishing, writing for and as live art and my work with COPY. I am experienced in running book binding and print workshops suitable for a wide range of groups and academic workshops in artists publishing.
I am interested in new collaborations and would love to hear from you if you are interested in any of my work.
